Zwei gute Dokumentarfilme, die ich am Wochenende mit Kater und Erkältung im Bett geguckt hab:

In "Winnebago Man" geht es um das berühmte und auch von mir heißgeliebte YouTube-Video mit dem "angriest man in the world". Ben Steinbauer macht sich auf die Suche nach Jack Rebney und findet einen eloquenten 79-jährigen, der der Welt mehr sagen wollte als "Fuck".

"Marwencol" erzählt die Geschichte von Mark Hogancamp, der in einer Bar von fünf Männern zusammengeschlagen wurde, nach neun Tagen Koma und vierzig Tagen Krankenhaus mit einer Hirnschädigung entlassen wurde, die ihm nur wenige Erinnerungen an sein bisheriges Leben ließ. Hinter seinem Trailer begann Mark, der sich keine Therapie leisten konnte, eine Stadt aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu bauen, die er mit Actionfiguren und Barbiepuppen bevölkert, welche ihn selbst und die Menschen in seinem Leben (inklusive seiner Angreifer) darstellen. Viele Geschichten tragen sich in "Marwencol" zu und Mark lichtet die unfassbar detailgetreuen Settings mit seiner Kamera ab. Der Film zeigt auch, wie Mark Hogancamps Fotos vom Kunstmagazin Esopus entdeckt werden und er mit der Entscheidung zu kämpfen hat, seine Welt zu schützen oder sie und sich der bedrohlichen Außenwelt zu zeigen.

Two great documentaries I've watched this weekend in bed with a major hangover and a cold:

"Winnebago Man " is about the famous and beloved internet phenomenon Jack Rebney aka "the angriest man in the world". Ben Steinbauer sets off to find him and gets to know an eloquent 79-year-old who wanted to tell the world more than "Fuck".

"Marwencol" tells the story of Mark Hogancamp, who was nearly beaten to death in a bar by five men. After nine days in a coma and forty days in the hospital, Mark was discharged with brain damage that left him little memory of his previous life. Since he couldn't afford therapy, Mark began to build a city in the backyard of his trailer, a World War II-era town, which he populated with action figures and Barbie dolls, representing himself and the people in his life (including his attackers). Mark is having the figures acting out various battles and love stories. He catches the incredibly detailed settings with his camera. The film also shows how Hogencamp's photos are discovered by the art magazine Esopus and how he is struggling with the decision to protect his very own world or to present it to the threatening world outside.

Melancholia

Hundstage

"Hundstage" ist langsam, brutal, quälend und mit bösem Humor gesegnet. "Spröde" ist das beste Wort, das mir zum Film des Wieners Ulrich Seidl einfällt. Und die Bilder, die ich in Gesellschaft von tausend Killermücken in der wohl schwülsten Nacht des Jahres beim "Kino unter Sternen" zu sehen bekam, die waren ziemlich großartig.

"Dog Days" is slow, brutal, painful to watch and blessed with a very dark sense of humor. "Brittle" is the best word that comes to my mind for the movie by Viennese director Ulrich Seidl. And the pictures that I got to see in the company of a thousand killer mosquitoes in probably the sultriest night of the year at the "Cinema beneath the stars" were pretty great.

Wer "Fantastic Mr. Fox" noch nicht gesehen hat: LOS!
Ganz, ganz oben auf meiner ewigen Lieblingsfilmliste. Genau wie alle Bücher von Roald Dahl meine Lieblingsbuchliste und alle seine Kurzgeschichen meine Lieblingskurzgeschichtenliste anführen. Und Bill Murray (der Dachs) ist sowieso ... ach, Ihr wisst schon.

Whoever hasn't seen "Fantastic Mr. Fox" yet: DO IT!
It's way up on my all-time favorite movie list. Just like all books by Roald Dahl are in the lead on my favorite book list and all his short stories on my favorite short story list. And Bill Murray (the badger), he's - okay, okay, you get the point.

Rivers and Tides

Endlich, endlich habe ich mir "Rivers and Tides", den Dokumentarfilm von Thomas Riedelsheimer über die Arbeit meines Lieblingskünstlers Andy Goldsworthy, angeschaut. Ich alter Hibbel sauge die majestätische Ruhe, die Goldsworthys Kunst ausstrahlt, mit allen Sinnen auf.

Finally, finally saw the documentary "Rivers and Tides" by Thomas Riedelsheimer about my favorite artist Andy Goldsworthy. Since I'm so squirrely, I just absorb the majestic quietness of Goldworthy's works.

Dreikönigstag ~ Epiphany

Am Dreikönigstag nahm mein Freund S. uns in Berlin mit einem Dreikönigskuchen in Empfang, den er in einer riesigen "Galeries Lafayette"-Tüte anschleppte.

Wer die Bohne in dem buttrigen Gebäck findet, wird zum König für einen Tag gekrönt und darf die beigelegte Krone tragen. Natürlich befand sich die Bohne im allerletzten Kuchenstück und genaugenommen war sie nicht mal eine Bohne, sondern eine Kunststoffkuh (???). So begegnete mir der erste der Heiligen Drei.

On Epiphany, January 6th, my friend S. welcomed us to Berlin with a French king cake. He carried it in a huge "Galeries Lafayette" bag.

The person who finds a bean in their slice becomes king for a day and gets to wear the paper crown which is included with the cake. Of course, the bean hid in the very last slice and it wasn't even a bean but a plastic cow figurine (???). This is how I met the first of the three kings.


Berlin war kalt, voller festgetretener Schneemassen, verlassener Christbäume und trister Überbleibsel des Glitzer der Silvesternacht. Als eine ausgewachsene Neujahrsdepression mir dicht auf den Fersen war, fielen auf einmal Sterne vom Himmel und klammerten sich an meinem Wollmantel fest.

Berlin was cold and full of snow, abandoned Christmas trees and the sad remains of New Year's Eve. When a New Year's depression was close on my heels, stars came from the sky and sat on my coat.







Der zweite König an meinem Dreikönigstag war der König der wilden Kerle.

Viele weitere gekrönte Häupter begegneten mir bei einem Besuch der Gemäldegalerie. Leider habe ich nur dieses eine Foto dort machen können und es ist nicht einmal ein König darauf.

Many other crowned heads greeted me kindly on my visit of Berlin's Gemäldegalerie. Unfortunately, I took only one photo and there is no king on it.

Oben ~ Up

Ich bin fast erstickt, um nicht noch lauter zu flennen und eventuell von den coolen Kids hinter mir auf dem Heimweg verhauen zu werden. "Oben" pflanzt sich direkt neben die Monster AG auf den Thron meiner Lieblingspixarfilme. Carl Frederiksen!

I almost suffocated trying to keep me from sobbing so hard, I didn't want to get beaten up by the cool kids in the back row on my way home. "Up" ascends the throne of my favorite Pixar movies next to "Monsters, Inc.". Yay for Carl Frederiksen!

If It Be Your Will

Ein Glotztipp, ein Glotztipp!
Heute um 23:00 Uhr auf dem SWR: "I'm Your Man", die Leonard-Cohen-Dokumentation, in der Antony Hegarty zum Niederknien und auf der Stelle Sterben schön "If It Be Your Will" singt. Bei U2 dann einfach umschalten.
Das Allerbeste zum 75. Geburtstag, Mr. Cohen (am 21. September ist es soweit)! Für mich werden Sie immer der Größte sein.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Der Trailer zum neuen Film von Wes Anderson nach dem Buch von Roald Dahl ist da. Wie immer dabei: Fantastic Mr. Bill Murray. Sieht oberspitze aus. Go Mr. Fox!

Am Stoa

Solltet Ihr Euch in der Münchner Peripherie aufhalten, mückenresistent sein oder Zugriff auf eine Familienpackung Autan haben, dann empfehle ich einen Ausflug zum Open Air Kino am Stoa ("Stoa" is baierisch für Stein und der Name kommt nicht von irgendwo, aber das werdet Ihr sehen). Die richtig guten Sachen (Auftritt der mit Abstand allerbesten Münchner Band G. Rag y los Hermanos Patchekos, Der Knochenmann (ein absoluter Superfilm! Beste Brenner-Verfilmung bisher, mit Abstand)) sind zwar schon gelaufen, aber die in Sommerwiesen gelegene Leinwand ist wirklich eine Attraktion. Vorher unbedingt am Straßenrand Halt machen und einen Riesenkorb Heidelbeeren beim "Kirschen"-Stand kaufen, die sind für mich das Popcorn des Open Air Kinos.
Ich habe meine nigelnagelneuen Sneaker aus dem Schlussverkauf getragen, ah, welch ein Gefühl, endlich keine halb auseinandergefallenen 10-Euro-Schühchen mehr an den Hufen zu haben, sondern spitzenmäßige Canvasteile von Pointer Footwear, Modell Soma. Neue Turnschuhe machen wahrlich einen neuen Sommer.

Herb & Dorothy, eine Dokumentation über eine Bibliothekarin und einen Postangestellten, die mit bescheidenen Mitteln eine der eindrucksvollsten Sammlungen zeitgenössischer Kunst in ihre New Yorker Einzimmerwohnung gequetscht haben.

"HERB & DOROTHY tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. In the early 1960s, when very little attention was paid to Minimalist and Conceptual Art, Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Devoting all of Herb's salary to purchase art they liked, and living on Dorothy's paycheck alone, they continued collecting artworks guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. Within these limitations, they proved themselves curatorial visionaries; most of those they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned artists including Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, Robert Barry, Lucio Pozzi, and Lawrence Weiner.

After thirty years of meticulous collecting and buying, the Vogels managed to accumulate over 2,000 pieces, filling every corner of their tiny one bedroom apartment. 'Not even a toothpick could be squeezed into the apartment,' recalls Dorothy. In 1992, the Vogels decided to move their entire collection to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The vast majority of their collection was given as a gift to the institution. Many of the works they acquired appreciated so significantly over the years that their collection today is worth millions of dollars. Still, the Vogels never sold a single piece. Today Herb and Dorothy still live in the same apartment in New York with 19 turtles, lots of fish, and one cat. They've refilled it with piles of new art they've acquired.

HERB & DOROTHY is directed by first time filmmaker Megumi Sasaki. The film received the Golden Starfish Award for the Best Documentary Film and Audience Award from the 2008 Hamptons International Film Festival. It has also received Audience Awards from the 2008 SILVERDOCS Film Festival and the 2009 Philadelphia Cinefest. Palm Springs International Film Festival named HERB & DOROTHY one of their 'Best of Fest' films in 2009."

Jetzt ist schon wieder was passiert.

Ich lese gerade die sechs Brenner-Romane von Wolf Haas. Absolut großartig sind die. Da ist mir auch wieder eingefallen, dass ich, wenn man's genau nimmt, ziemlich verknallt bin in Josef Hader. Und dass ich mir auf der Stelle die Brenner-Verfilmungen (wann erscheint wohl "Der Knochenmann" auf DVD?) sowie "Indien" und "Blue Moon" besorgen muss.

"Und ist ja auch wirklich eine interessante Sache. Weil die Kinder von den reichen Leuten haben es auch nicht immer leicht. Natürlich, 90 Prozent zum Vergessen, weil die Ausbildung zum Cabriofahrer überstehen ja nur die wenigsten ohne Hirnverkühlung. Aber andererseits, 90 Prozent von den normalen Leuten auch zum Vergessen! Ist natürlich schon wahr, dass Geld den Charakter verdirbt, bin ich der Letzte, der das bestreit. Aber Armut verdirbt auch den Charakter, Mitteldings verdirbt auch den Charakter. Charakter überhaupt ein sehr empfindliches Gemüse."

Trapped In The Closet

Sonntag! Grauer Himmel, genug zu Essen im Kühlschrank, ein warmes, frisch bezogenes Bett.
Zeit, mal wieder alle 22 Folgen von R. Kellys Meisterwerk "Trapped In The Closet" anzusehen und sich den Bauch wund zu lachen. Wenn man noch die zahlreichen Parodien auf die Hip-Hopera (von "Weird Al" Yancovic bis Jimmy Kimmel) mitglotzt, kann man die kommende Woche gleich auch noch im Bett verbringen.
Sicher ist, dass man nach spätestens fünf Folgen am Stück jede eigene Handlung (Bier holen aus dem Kühlschrank, Gang zum Klo) zu rappen beginnt. Bis Chapter 15 muss heute aber in jedem Fall durchgehalten werden, denn da gibt es einen Gastauftritt von Will Oldham als Police Officer.
Im Sommer sollen übrigens weitere Chapter hinzukommen, "The past chapters are nothing compared to these.", sagt R. Kelly.
